Proud history of Matale Christ Church College.


On January 5th of 1864, at the foot of the beautiful Wilshire Mountains near the administrative center of Matale, which is considered the heart of Matale town, the first Christ Church of the Christ Church group was born in a 50x18 feet tiled building. English of “Christ Church Boys English Elementary School” has been started under the leadership of madam mekarthi.

Since the beginning of the school, teaching has been done in English only. Later, a network of schools was established in the areas of Kurunegala, Moratuwa, wattegama, Baddegama, Ratmalana, Haguranketha in the areas of Kurunegala, Moratuwa, Wattegama, Rathamalana, Haguranketha under the name of Christ Church, which was controlled under the Bishop of the Kurunegala Diocese of the English Missionary Company. 7 English schools were established in Central Province only in 1900 AD. One of them is Christ Church Church . Also, there were 148 schools in the island that received aid from the government. Christ Church College was included in that category as well. Vernacular education was started in 1920 AD.Around the year 1931 Sinhala and Tamil media were established separately as 2 sections and in 1945 AD the school was controlled as 3 sections. In the year 1963 AD, Christ Church College has become a full Sinhala medium school.
Christ Church College has produced a large number of very special people in its history. Dignitaries such as the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mr. Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake, the first President of Sri Lanka, Mr. William Gopallava, the first Inspector General of Police of Sri Lanka, Mr. Richard Aluvihare, and scholars such as Mr. Daya rohana Athukorala, a senior lecturer at the University of Colombo, were educated in the shadow of the Christ church College. In 1912 AD, it is a historical event that Sri Lanka's first scout team was from Christ Church College under the initiative of Mr. F.G. Stevenson, a British national who worked as an engineer in the Public Works Department (P.W.D) attached to Matale District. Likewise, Christ Church College is the cradle of hockey. The school's hockey heritage dates back to the early 19th century. Hockey has been played in the school since 1930. Christ Church College became a National School on 03/03/1999 AD. Currently, it is an institution that provides education from 1st year to 13th year in Sinhala and English medium.
